@OBA
THE WALKING DEAD
WAS A FLICK WITH EDDIE GRIFFIN ABOUT THE ALL BLACK PLATOON IN VIETNAM
Heres a quick once over of the flick in case u need a cliffs notes type fix:
A number of movies about America's experience in Vietnam have been made since the conflict ended in 1975. But none showed the war from a Black perspective until the recently released action drama The Walking Dead.
The film, written and directed by Preston A. Whitmore II, is about a platoon of soldiers (all of its members are Black with the exception of one White corporal) sent to help evacuate survivors from a POW (prisoner of war) camp in the jungles of Vietnam in 1972.
What they found was a lot different than they were told. It turns out to be almost a suicide mission with the platoon struggling to survive in the midst of non-stop enemy fire. "This was supposed to be a routine operation," Whitmore told JET. "They were supposed to fly in and fly out. Nothing was what it was supposed to be. These guys were used as decoys."
The Walking Dead personalizes each man's story and, by way of flashbacks, tells each man's story.
Veteran actor Joe Morton plays Sergeant Barkley, a minister who goes to war. "My character is a reverend. He comes home on Mother's Day and sees his wife making love to another man," Morton explains. The tragic consequences take him to the jungles of Vietnam. "Barkley is the most mysterious character. As a man of God, Barkley feels that everyone is driven by that force, and he struggles to come to terms with what he did in his civilian life that drove him to enter his own `Hell on Earth."
Allen Payne is Lance Corporal Cole Evans, a young family man looking to have a decent roof over his head. Payne said he used his brother's children to capture the family man in his character. "Spending time with my older brothees four kids helped me prepare for this role." Portraying a father and husband was totally different for Payne, who has performed in such hit films as Jason's Lyric, New Jack City and CB4.
The Walking Dead also is a major departure for standup comedian Eddie Griffin. His character, Pvt. Hoover Branche, is a streetwise hustler who uses his humor to help shield him from the sheer horror of the war.
"Branche is a no-nonsense guy who knows war is a bunch of bull," he said. "He has been through it before." Beyond surviving, Branche is looking to regain his lost self-respect.
"He is dealing with being in love. It was his girlfriend's birthday and he didn't have a present." Branche got in trouble when he tried to get a gift and was humiliated in front of all of his loved ones. He ended up feeling that he had nothing to lose and might as well sign up and go to Vietnam.
Vonte Sweet, plays Private Joe Brooks, a young Black man who joined because has girlfriend was going to go with another guy who had a "plan" and now he just wants a future. Sweet, who was just a toddler when the actual war ended, said of the film: "There aren't a lot of people my age who know much about Vietnam. This will be an opportunity to bring something new to my peers."
Roger Floyd plays Corporal Pippens, the lone White member of the mission. Pippens has seen a lot of suffering and, at 21, is one of only two members of the platoon who has seen combat.
Whitmore said he wanted to make a film that paid tribute to Black heroic efforts during Vietnam. "Previous films about the Vietnam experience have portrayed Black servicemen as either cowards, buffoons or background characters. This film is different, not only from other war movies, but also from other films about African-American men. For the first time you get to see four Black guys with guns for legitimate reasons."
Morton agreed with Whitmore's descriptions of Blacks and war movies. "It's seldom that you see a movie with Blacks where we aren't killing each other. I'm hoping audiences will see these as people with real problems."
